Inclusion and SEND
At Broomgrove Junior School we believe that all children have an equal right to a high-quality education within a positive and supportive environment. In order to achieve this, we strive to remove barriers to learning and participation which promotes high standards, expectations, positive relationships and the fulfilment of potential for all of our children.
We pride ourselves in being an inclusive school in which all children are included in all aspects of school life, particularly children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Our teaching and support staff take time to understand the individual learning needs of children in their classes and use the graduated approach of ‘assess, plan, do, review’ in order to respond to a pupil’s learning need. This is not done in isolation, we ensure that children and their parents and carers are actively involved in the assessment and decision making process.
We are extremely proud of the achievements of all of our pupils and use adaptive teaching strategies to ensure all children are given the very best opportunities to thrive and unlock their potential.
All of our policies and practices comply with the guidance in the SEND Code of Practice 2015 which defines Special Education Needs as:
A child or young person has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her.
A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she:
- has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or
- has a disability which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools or mainstream post-16 institutions
Our SENCo, Miss Bonner, is a qualified teacher with a wealth of experience. She has worked in schools in London and Essex for over 20 years and also holds the National SENCo award.
